India Election 2009
The Election Commission issued notice to the Home Minister and senior congress leader Mr. P Chidambaram on Sunday for allegedly offering poll sops during a recent visit to Rajasthan.
The Commission also issued notice to senior BJP leader Mr. Jaswant Singh for distributing currency notes among the people in Barmer district of Rajasthan.
AIR correspondent reports that the commission has made elaborate arrangements for smooth and transparent conduct of polls.
Two senior leaders of the Congress and the BJP are under the scanner of the Poll Panel.
P Chidambarm has reportedly violated the model code by talking about grant of citizenship to displaced Hindus from Pakistan , Mr. Jaswant Singh is facing the flack for his alleged distribution of money among people.
While Chidambaram has been asked to reply by Monday, deadline for Jaswant Singh is Tuesday evening.
The Commission was not also satisfied with the response of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s response.
The Poll Panel strongly disapproved his remarks against a district magistrate in Uttar Pradesh.
The Election Commission’s message is loud and clear.
No body will be allowed to violate the code of conduct.
Advani reiterates to bring back Indian money from Swiss banks
Senior BJP Leader Mr. L.K. Advani has again said that if the NDA comes to power, it will spare no effort to bring the Indian money back into the country from Swiss Banks.
He was speaking to reporters at Aurangabad in Maharashtra on Sunday after addressing an election rally.
Asked, why the NDA did not make any effort when it was in power, the BJP leader said secrecy was the last word with the Swiss banks at that time but now the world is facing economic meltdown and the talk of forcing these banks to declare the names of its account holders is gaining ground.
He criticized the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for not stressing forcefully the issue at the G-20 summit.
In reply to a question whether the NDA would seek help of the Third Front in forming the government, he said the Third Front is a non-starter and an illusion.
Mr. Advani pointed out that the NDA was focusing on three points of good governance, development and national security.
UPA not soft on terrorism, says Sonia
The UPA Chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi has said that terrorism is one of the main issues before the country and UPA government has tackled it effectively.
Addressing election rallies in eastern Uttar Pradesh at Bansgaon, Sikanderpur and Varanasi, she refuted the charge of being soft on terrorism.
She said that the NDA should not forget the terror attacks on Parliament and Akshardham during its regime which it failed to tackle.
She criticised the BSP led UP government for misusing funds provided by the centre.
UPA is intact: Pranab
Senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee has dismissed the BJP charge that UPA is disintegrating.
Talking to reporters in New Delhi, he said all the constituents of the UPA except PMK, are still with the alliance.
Mr. Mukherjee said the Congress did not have any alliance at the national level and is having only seat adjustments at the state level.
In reply to a question on the coming together of the leaders of the RJD, SP and LJP on one platform, Mr Mukherjee said all the three have reiterated their commitment to the UPA.
Hitting hard at the BJP election manifesto, Mr Mukherjee said the BJP makes lofty commitments during election time but all these promises are put into the dustbin once it is in power.
He said, on the other hand, the Congress can talk about performance as the country has been put on the growth path.
Poor development in WBengal during Left’s 30 yrs rule: Cong
Congress has brought out a Development Report Card on West Bengal attacking the Left parties for their attempts to gain power at the Centre.
Releasing the report card in New Delhi, senior congress leader Pranab Mukherjee alleged that if Left parties could not deliver goods in one state, how can the people trust the Third Front under their leadership to rule the country.
He also rejected the demand for a separate Gorkhaland.
The 12-page document alleges that development was poor in West Bengal and even after 30 years of Left rule, the state has very high levels of hunger and malnutrition when compared to the rest of the country.
SP chooses Nafisa Ali its candidate for Lucknow
The Samajwadi Party General Secretary Mr. Amar Singh on Sunday announced the candidature of social activist Nafisa Ali from the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat as bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt is out of contention.
The Supreme Court had rejected Sanjay Dutt’s plea for suspension of his conviction in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blast to contest the Lok Sabha polls.
He was the party’s star candidate for the Lucknow seat.
Mr. Amar Singh said in New Delhi that Nafisa Ali is ready to contest elections from Lucknow as SP candidate.
She had earlier contested the 2004 parliamentary polls on a Congress ticket against Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee from South Kolkata seat but had lost.
In Uttar Pradesh, former Miss India and social activist Nafisa Ali will be Samajwadi Party candidate from Lucknow constituency in place of Sanjay Dutt.
It was announced Sunday afternoon by party general secretary Amar Singh at Lucknow in a press conference in which Snjay Dutt newly appointed general secretary of the party was also present.
Nafisa Ali, the 1976 Miss India winner urged the Congress not to field any candidate against her to strengthen the UPA.

EC expresses disapproval of Mulayam speech

Mr. Yadav, in his speech, is alleged to have made derogatory remarks against the District Magistrate. The commission has advised Mr. Yadav to be more cautious and refrain from such acts in the future. It may be recalled that Election Commission issued a notice to the Samajwadi Party leader and his reply was found unsatisfactory.
The party spokesperson for Tamil Nadu, Shri.K.Ramasubramanian, told the AIR Coimbatore correspondent that the final list of candidates in all the constituencies will be declared by this week. The party will contest alone in all the 40 constituencies in the State and Puducherry.
Union Minister Kumari Selja is the Congress candidate for the Ambala, Lok Sabha constituency. The party which released a list of five candidates for Lok Sabha seats in Haryana, said Deepinder Singh Hooda, the son of state Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, will contest from Rohtak. Industrialist Naveen Jindal is the candidate from Kurukshetra.
In Maharashtra, Nana Patole of congress who is contesting as a rebel from Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha constituency against NCP-Congress official nominee Praful Patel has been suspended from the party for a period of six years.
The Election Commissioner Mr.Navin Chawla has asserted that the Commission will adopt a zero- tolerance policy on violation of Model Code of Conduct, particularly with regard to the defacement of public property, will be dealt with strongly. Mr.Chawla said that the Commission will also ensure that no one is subjected to intimidation and prevented from voting as per one’s own choice.
The Election Commissioner was talking to reporters in Gangtok on Friday, after a meeting with senior state government officials on the poll preparedness in the state.
Earlier, talking to a Television Channel, Mr. Pawar said that his party is part of the UPA only in a few states like Maharashtra and Goa and not the entire country. In reply to a question, the NCP Chief said he is not part of the Third Front in the state, but has an alliance with the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD in Orissa.
